Dr. Sharon Roth, OMD
ACUPUNCTURE & FERTILITY
Acupuncture, Fertility & Assisted Reproductive Technologies
Dr. Roth has been specializing in helping people with fertility problems since 2002. Chinese Medicine has long been used to help couples conceive naturally: acupuncture and herbs can help regulate menstrual cycles, normalize the reproductive hormones, and strengthen the body to hold a fragile pregnancy in patients with histories of miscarriage. It can also improve sperm quality and quantity for those suffering with male factor subfertility. There are Oriental medical books both ancient and modern detailing the differential diagnoses and subsequent options for treatment for all these fertility problems, which have, of course, been a part of the human condition for thousands of years.
Recently, however, published studies have shown that acupuncture is also useful in helping couples who aren’t trying to conceive naturally but rather are pursuing assisted reproductive technologies, such as in-vitro fertilization. Chinese Medicine can improve response to the fertility medications given during IVF cycles, improve egg quality and quantity, thicken the uterine lining and increase the likelihood of successful implantation at the time of embryo transfer.
For those doing IVF who would like acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer to increase the chances of implantation, call our office at (702) 259-6996 to let us know when your procedure will be. Dr. Roth will meet you at your R.E.’s office 45 minutes before your transfer. You’ll do acupuncture before the procedure, then she will wait for you during the transfer, and you’ll do another treatment right afterwards. The treatment replicates that done in the study published in the April 2002 issue of Fertility and Sterility that showed a significant advantage to the acupuncture group versus the controls. By joining you right there at your doctor’s office, Dr. Roth approximates that study as closely as possible; she hopes to get the very best results of treatment and also reduce your stress on that important day. The fee for this service is $350, with nominal additional charges only if the transfer is prolonged/delayed or falls on a Sunday. Because of the nature of how these are scheduled, a credit card number must accompany your initial paperwork: Embryo transfers require Dr. Roth not only to clear large portions of time from her schedule, but they also sometimes get changed at the last minute by the Reproductive Endocrinologist, thereby requiring Dr. Roth to change her patient schedule at the last minute as well. By providing your credit card number (which only will be billed $100 for changes within 48 hours of your scheduled embryo transfer day and the full amount for changes the day of the transfer) Dr. Roth can assure you that she can accomodate you on your big day. Please feel free to call with any questions you might have that are not addressed here.
